Introduced Species Cultivated
Silver maples are native to the eastern United States. We have one mature tree on the south side of our yard. Most of the flowers are male, but a few of the branches produce perfect (bisexual) flowers, which makes it polygamous from a botanical point of view. The perfect flowers are protogynous.
This tree produces the first flowers in the yard, but the flowers are wind pollinated and I've never seen any insects visiting them. (Of course, the flowers come out early in the spring before insects are active.)
